SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn with David Shukiar
DESCRIPTION:Session 1 – April 7:\nFrom 7th Grade to Auschwitz\, A Journey from Denial to Bearing Witness \nIn 7th grade\, David Shukiar received a flier claiming the Holocaust was a hoax. That moment began a long search for truth that ultimately led him to Auschwitz-Birkenau\, Majdanek and Terezin. Through photos and personal reflection\, this presentation follows his path from encountering denial to walking the death camps themselves\, retracing the final steps of Sophia and Hermi van Hasselt\, his daughter’s Holocaust “twins.” \nThis class explores how misinformation takes hold\, how truth confronts us\, and why remembering remains essential. \nSession 2 – April 14\nWhispers from Terezin\, the Children and the Words they Left Behind \nExplore the haunting poetry of the film Through Children’s Eyes in this text-based class that uncovers the deeper meanings woven into the words of the children of Terezin. Together\, we’ll experience their poetry and examine how these texts\, through video musical examples\, inspired and shaped the music composed for the film\, revealing the powerful dialogue between their voices and today’s artistic expression. \nJoin us in person at the Schaefer Family Campus or online. \nZoom Link Livestream YouTube \n  \n  \nAbout David Shukiar \nThe music of David Shukiar has been heard in synagogues\, concert halls (including Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall in New York) and theatres all over North America and in Israel. For the past 17 years David has served in the cantorial office at Temple Adat Elohim in Thousand Oaks\, CA.  He has built a unique and successful music program spanning many generations. He currently serves as president of the Guild of Temple Musicians.

SUMMARY:Through Children's Eyes: Documentary Screening followed by conversation with Movie Score Composer David Shukiar
DESCRIPTION:Through Children’s Eyes is a powerful multimedia presentation that brings to life the poetry and artwork created by children imprisoned in the Terezin concentration camp. Their words are set to evocative music\, accompanied by their own drawings and paintings—poignant expressions of hope\, fear\, and resilience in the face of unimaginable hardship. The documentary follows the creation of this moving tribute and the extraordinary journey leading to a once-in-a-lifetime concert held in the historic Attic Theatre at Terezin\, a space that once echoed with music during the darkest days of World War II. \n“As I composed the music for this piece\, these children came to life for me. I could see their faces and hear their voices and I became deeply committed to sharing their stories and preserving their memory. After the premiere\, my focus shifted to bringing the piece to life in the very place where the poetry was written—standing in the space where these precious children scream to us in silence through the walls of the camp.”\n– David Shukiar \nRegister\nThrough Children’s Eyes Film Screening is generously underwritten by the Mason Slaine Family Holocaust Remembrance & Education Endowment Fund and by Friends of Music & the Arts.
