SUMMARY:What Does it Mean to be Human? - Wisdom & Wonder Series with Rabbi Rachel Mikva
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to be human? Are we good? Are we free? Are we more than dust? Religious convictions about the fundamental nature of human beings significantly influence public policy related to criminal justice\, abortion\, gender\, and more. They are frequently invoked in America’s contemporary “culture wars.”  By broadening our collective understanding of what it means to be human\, we resist the establishment of one particular Christian perspective as determinative for the entire body politic. \nRegister

SUMMARY:Torah Study with Rabbi Rachel Mikva (Wisdom & Wonder Series)
DESCRIPTION:The CCAR is developing a new Torah commentary\, and Rabbi Mikva was asked to curate material (historical and modern\, traditional and radical) for Parashat Noach. Be part of the conversation that shapes this important project! \nIn person and Virtual at the links below. \n Zoom Link Livestream \n  \nAbout Rabbi Rachel Mikva \nRabbi Rachel Mikva\, Herman E. Schaalman Professor of Jewish Studies and Senior Faculty Fellow at the Chicago Theological Seminary\, served as a congregational rabbi for thirteen years before returning to academia.  Her research and teaching focus on interpretation of the Hebrew Bible in various times and places\, exploring how the ideas both shape and reflect the societies in which they unfold. The most profound truths are not simple ones\, and they often live in dialectical tension with other truths. Pursuit of justice is essential\, but the equally compelling call to mercy sometimes (gently) pushes justice aside. Freedom is a God-given right\, but freedom without commitment and purpose leaves us rootless. Peace is our perpetual desire\, even as we sometimes decide we must fight. We also live with the breathtaking and terrifying knowledge that religious passion is a catalyst for great good\, but all too often is wielded as a weapon. She holds an AB from Stanford University\, Rabbinic Ordination\, Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion and a PhD from Jewish Theological Seminary.
