On this Shabbat we will dedicate a beautiful new mosaic in the Rabbi Merle E. Singer Sanctuary. The
mosaic, “Birkat HaLev: Blessing of the Heart,” is inspired by the threefold benediction recited by the priests (kohanim) in The Temple in Jerusalem. Now recited by Rabbis and Cantors to B’nai Mitzvah and Confirmands, couples under the chuppah, on becoming Jewish by choice, or by parents as they bless their children at their Shabbat dinner tables, it is considered a sacred right. Unlike a physical embrace, a priestly blessing is said aloud; it reaffirms the link between the Jewish people and the Holy One.
Birkat HaLev: Blessing of the Heart was generously dedicated by Maurice Plough in Honor of his beloved wife, Margie in April, 2022
“The blank wall in the Rabbi Merle E. Sanctuary was always troubling for me. The emptiness lacked the kind of spirituality I found to be comforting. In addition, I felt compelled to leave a tangible legacy to Temple Beth El that would inspire all members present and future, and I wanted to honor my beautiful wife and the relationship we share. Bonnie Cohen captured everything I wanted this mosaic to be. It’s about love and G-d’s presence within all of us, and I hope it inspires all who view it”
