Lunch & Learn: The Song of Redemption and the Song of Confession

On Shabbat Shira, we recount the Exodus from Egypt and the ancient tune our people sang on the shores of the sea. Throughout Yom Kippur, we count our shortcomings by tapping our hearts in time to a version of that same tune. How can this be? Explore tshe musical connection between two starkly contrasting sacred occasions and consider its implications for us today.
Cantor Josh Breitzer is president of the American Conference of Cantors and has served Congregation Beth Elohim in Brooklyn since his 2011 ordination from Hebrew Union College. Named by The Forward as a leading voice of Jewish music, Cantor Breitzer has sung and taught in communities throughout North America and around the world. Cantor Breitzer is an instructor at HUC and on faculty at URJ Crane Lake Camp. He lives with his wife Donna and their two sons, Jonah and Gideon.
